DC Community Board, General Body Candidate

Meet Kayla.

Kayla and her husband moved to Washington, D.C. in 2020, and shortly thereafter became founding members of TGS in the District. She has been a housing justice organizer with Community Change, a national organization that builds the power of low-income people, especially people of color and immigrants, since early 2021. Before her work at Community Change, she organized for nearly a decade in South Carolina, where she founded and led the Midlands Organized Response for Equity and Justice (MORE Justice). Kayla has worked with local communities to lead campaigns around ending racial profiling by police, gun violence, the criminalization of those with mental illness, and the school to prison pipeline. Kayla is also the Co-Founder and Principal of Gloria Rose Consulting, a boutique consulting group committed to working with organizations for long-term grassroots empowerment, community engagement and systemic transformation. She is passionate about the ability of all people to transform unjust systems and is committed to building grassroots people power to win meaningful change.

Kayla received her undergraduate degrees from St. Louis University in Madrid, Spain and the American University in Cairo, in Egypt. She completed her graduate work at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California and there earned a MA in Spanish Translation and Interpretation and a MA in International Policy, with a focus on Conflict Resolution and Community Development.
