TGS DC MEMBER SINCE MAR 2021.

Meet Anthony.

Anthony Mitchell hails from the home of crawfish boils, Jazz music, King Cake, and world-famous Café Du Monde: New Orleans, Louisiana! As a former Assistant Executive Director of the Eastern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Anthony oversaw more than 200 Chapters throughout the East Coast of the United States, South Africa, United Kingdom, Germany, and Asia. Shortly thereafter, Anthony spent time in England, France, Germany, and Amsterdam learning about similarities between these countries’ social and political imbalances in relation to the United States.

After traveling abroad, working for local government, and now spending time at the nation’s capital, Anthony became encouraged to pursue his desire to shape policy and address the inequalities in our country. Currently, Anthony serves as Senior Manager on Lyft’s Government Relations, leading efforts for transit and micromobility within the DC and Boston markets. Prior to this, he served in the Executive Office of Mayor Muriel Bowser, where his main priority was to bring government resources, services, and information to District residents. This role came after Anthony served in United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate, where he advised members of Congress and worked on policies related to healthcare, education, judiciary, civil rights, and more. Additionally, Anthony also served as Director of Health Policy and Legislative Strategy for the Joint Congressional Staff Task Force on Racial Justice and Reform, where he developed comprehensive policy proposals that communicated the thoughts and values of the Black Americans, as well as articulated legislative efforts to bring equitable solutions to our communities.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT TGS?

Outside of the physical space for Black movers and shakers in the city to gather, it is the vehicle for generating genuine and authentic interactions – which leads to profoundly positive personal and professional endeavors.

If YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH 3 PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?

I would choose to have dinner with Barack Obama (to get his candid take on politics and his ascent to the Presidency), Beyoncé (to discuss her musical accomplishments and how she has managed to maintain privacy, relevance, and be at the forefront of her industry), and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (to hear his firsthand accounts of history and the comparisons to the struggles of his time to ours now).

What Is One Piece of advice you would share with your younger self?

To my younger self, I would say to be steadfast in your goals yet flexible in your approach. There are many ways to get to your destination, so keep an open mind as you pursue what makes you happy.

What is your favorite quote or mantra?

“The only thing stopping evil from winning is if good people do nothing.”
